AIM: TO LOOK AT THE WATER CYCLE AND HOW CLIMATE CHANGE IS AFFECTING IT.

Definition:

water cycle describes how water evaporates from the surface of the globe the water cycle  rises into the atmosphere, cools and condenses into rain or snow in clouds, and falls again to the surface as precipitation. ... The cycling of water in and out of the atmosphere is a significant aspect of the weather patterns on globe.

A green box with icons and white text. Text reads: Where is Earth's Water? 96.5 percent is in the oceans; 1.7 percent is in lakes, rivers, streams, and soil; 1.7 percent is in polar ice caps, glaciers, and permanent snow; 0.001 percent is in water vapor in Earth's atmosphere

Scientific words:

  • Evaporation. When water is heated by radiant energy it turns into water vapor.
  • Transpiration. Evaporation from plants.
  • Condensation. When water vapor cools, molecules join together and form clouds.
  • Precipitation. When clouds get heavy the waters falls as rain, sleet, hail, or snow.
  • Acidification: the action or process of making or becoming acidic.

We will be conducting an experiment that looks at the different ways that climate change is affecting the water cycle.
An illustration of the water cycle showing how water travels from rivers and streams to clouds to snow and back again

THE WATER CYCLE EXPERIMENT

Bag 1: Normal Water cycle
Bag 2: Water cycle with CO 2 added: like Oceans in climate change
Bag 3: Water cycle with ice added: like Antarctica in climate change

Material:

  1. plastic bag
  2. vivid marker
  3. 1 cup of water
  4. 2 drops of food colouring

Steps:

  1.  find a group of 3
  2.   have one person in your group to get a plastic bag/vivid marker
  3.  draw your pictures on your snap lock bag
  4. get 1 cup of water then put 2 drops of food colouring in your snap lock bag
  5.  hang up the bag on the window

Findings:

The Water Cycle: Bag 1
CO 2 Water Cycle: Bag 2
Acid
Desert Water Cycle
Bag 3
Does it cycle?
yes yesyes
Amount of Water
222
Acidity
121

Key: Water and acidity amount: 1 = none
2 = small drips
3 = large drips

Other comments:

bag 1.

water cycle in bag 1 had no acidity

the water cycle in bag 1

the formed in small drops

bag 2

water cycle in bag 2 had small drops of acidity

the water did cycle in bag 2

the water in bag 2 formed small drops in bag 2

bag 3

the water did cycle in bag 3

the water cycle had no acidity in it

the water in bag 3 formed small drops like the other bags

Conclusion:

all bags did cycle even bag 3 which only had 2 tablespoon of water in the bag.
the water formed in small drops in all bags and bag 1 and 3 both had no acidity it the bags.

Draw a labelled diagram of the Water Cycle

Water cycle words:
  1. Precipitation   precipitation is any product of the condensation of atmospheric water vapour that falls under gravity. The main forms of precipitation include drizzle, rain, sleet
    ,
  2. Hurricanes
  3. Storms
there a storms with lightning and thunder. Its produced by a cumulonimbus cloud, usually producing gusty winds, heavy rain and sometimes hail.
  4. Evaporation
the water in wet clothes takes heat energy from sun and gets evaporated.
  5. Carbon Dioxide
Carbon dioxide is a colorless gas with a density about 60% higher than that of dry air
    .
  6. Water
Water is a transparent, tasteless, odorless,  which is the main constituent of Earth's streams, lakes, and oceans,
  7. Oceans
An ocean is a body of water that composes much of a planet's hydrosphere. On Earth,
  8. Water vapour
When liquid water is evaporated to form water vapor, heat is absorbed. This helps to cool the surface of the Earth.
  9. Freshwater
  10. Flooding
